Michelle Shute hits it out of the ballpark again when this arrived at my door: пол маккартни – Paul McCartney and his album – снова в ссср – Back in the USSR. Among audiophiles this is often known as the Russian Album. It’s a series of cover songs recorded live in-studio over two days in the summer of 1987 and released a few months later in 1988. What’s so amazing about this particular copy is that it is the second of two pressings made in, and exclusively for distribution only in, the USSR. There were 400,000 discs total. The first pressing is especially rare with only 50,000 pressings of 11 songs. This copy, and it’s 349,999 siblings, has an additional two songs (13 total). It was eventually released worldwide a few years later and that release included even more songs. But this disc is pretty darned special, at least to me, if not statistically. As for McCartney’s interpretation of such classics as Twenty Flight Rock, That’s Alright Mama, Lawdy, Miss Clawdy and others, they’re classic McCartney just as you’d expect. Especially good is his take on Lucille. His voice was pristine and able to really deliver that raucous number. They’re not all stellar though. His cover of Gershwin’s Summertime (and the living is easy) is really not my favorite. Even McCartney ought leave well enough alone sometimes. Nevertheless, Michelle Shute FTW!
