“Every version of yourself was doing its best with what it knew. Give yourself some grace.” ~ Mel Robbins
A couple of days ago, while walking to the secret HRB parking lot after work, I caught a whiff of cigarette smoke. Then, I caught a glimpse of something blue beneath a tree, obscured by branches, leaves, and a dumpster. A few steps closer, I saw milk crates, some with people sitting atop them, others empty. Another whiff of smoke. Memories flooded back from all the places and all the times I stole a similar smoke break, always with other smokers. Each group formed a bond during the 6-8 minute smoke break. Sometimes, non-smokers like Crystal would come along for the conversation. She wasted a lot of time with me out on the ramp of the old Reynolds Building. I don’t crave a smoke anymore, but a good whiff on the breeze is alright. I sure am glad I quit, but every now and then I’m reminded that it wasn’t all bad.
