“Today may there be peace within.
May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born in yourself and others.
May you use the gifts that you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content with yourself just the way you are.”

then and now

then and now

As we were assembling before Saturday’s parade, mom and I walked past this float full of hippy kids. I said, “Look! It’s me and Alisa!” We laughed. Alisa Ellen Marshall Burnett is my oldest BFF. We really have been best friends forever. We had so much fun when we were children. I don’t have a single bad memory of her. Well, except now she likes to remind me from time to time how I would get mad because she couldn’t keep time when I wanted her to be in my band. Bless her heart for putting up with me. I’m sure I was a terror, what with my complete over-the-top music obsession and all.

The first time I stayed away from home was at Alisa’s. The very first time I tried to stay with her mom and dad had to come after me. I was maybe five or six at the time, and to that point, had only stayed with my grandparents. Seems I wasn’t too comfortable after dark in those early years. My folks sent Uncle Darrell to get me, hoping he’d take the sting out of my embarrassment as only he could. Later, after I had stayed with Alisa a few times, I remember thinking what an idiot I was for ever being afraid. And rightfully so. Her mama, Imogene (below), always made me laugh. She’s a hoot. Now, Alisa has a mini me, Riley. I bet he doesn’t get scared to stay all night with his friends. He’s too much like his unflappable mother to be such a scardy cat.

I couldn’t have picked a better friend than Alisa to walk through this life with me. We’ve gone years without seeing or talking with one another, but seem to pick up right where we leave off every time. There’s no feeling in the world like an old friend. I wish everyone had an Alisa.
