“Take my hand. We will walk. We will only walk. We will enjoy our walk without thinking of arriving anywhere.” ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
This Groundhog Day, we honored Shero for her service to our nation. Early this morning, I mentioned to her nurse that she was a vet. Before you know it, she had arranged a pinning ceremony, an honor bestowed on veterans in Hospice care. Aunt Lois and I made a few calls to rally the troops, and most of those in attendance are pictured here. It was a wonderful combination of family and friends, who are really chosen family. I don’t even know why I make a distinction between them. Anyway, it was a short but extremely meaningful ceremony that warmed my heart. Shero would have absolutely loved it. She could hear everything that was happening, and when I said thank you to Clark, the gentleman who led us in the ceremony, himself a veteran, Shero let out a grunt and raised her eyebrows quickly. She is in there, she just can’t participate the way we’d like. The veteran pinning ceremony was especially poignant as today is Hero and Shero’s 63rd wedding anniversary. Aunt Lois was at their wedding in 1963 and said it was lovely. Uncle Harold remembered them coming by the house afterward, Shero looking beautiful in her white dress, Hero dapper in his uniform. He said it was a beautiful day, cold, but beautiful. I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am to my family and friends for helping me and walking this road with me, including those of you reading along and offering well-wishes from afar. It’s one of the few truly wonderful things technology allows. I continue to be extremely blessed and well cared for. I don’t know what I did to deserve it, but I’m sure glad I did it.
