Let me tell you, I have had the best day. You might recall that last year, Shero and I saw cousin Ray and the Boyd County Lions play in the final four of the boys’ high school state baseball tournament. They lost to Trinity. Today, they earned their second trip in as many years to the Final Four by defeating University Heights of Hopkinsville, 9-3. It was a thrilling game. None of us will be able to speak tomorrow because of screaming for hours.

The guys played a good, clean game. The weather was hot and sunny, but we got lucky and found shade. EKY rep. Rocky Adkins, a Boyd County resident just up the hill from Uncle Harold and Aunt Phyllis, made an appearance to root on the boys and to politic, of course. I looked at last year’s photos, and my goodness, how Ray and his brother Gryffen have grown. Ray will be a senior next year, and I’m really hoping he’ll get a state championship under his belt. He’s an excellent player, and later this summer, he’ll be playing in what I call the farm club of the farm club. I don’t know what it’s really called, but basically it’s a team of senior high school boys who play under the tutelage of the Lexington Legends, who used to be the farm club for the Houston Astros and the Kansas City Royals. Hence, the farm club of the farm club. (They are not currently a farm club for any MLB team, but are part of the Atlantic pro league.) Anyway, Ray is working to become a major athlete, and the whole family is immensely proud of him. Fourteen-year-old Gryffen is no slouch athlete. He is ranked 37th in the state and third in his region (I think), in archery. He’s got his sights set on Olympic competition, or maybe I’ve got my eyes set on him competing as an Olympian. Either way, Ray and Gryffen are both winners in my book, whether they compete on the world stage or do something completely different after high school. For now, it’s McCracken County next Friday at 10 am. I know where I’ll be, with Shero and Hero on each shoulder. Our Eastern Kentucky boys are ready for another win.
