“Make room for things that matter by removing everything that doesn’t.” ~ Brian Gardener

reverend

My sister from another mister took a big step today in being ordained a Unitarian Universalist minister. The Rev. Kiya Heartwood received the blessings of her congregation – Brazos Valley – and several other congregations in central Texas, while Stacy Yelton and I cheered her on from Lexington. I was supposed to be there in person, but my travel was thwarted from the start; first with the expired driver’s license, finally with a sick parental unit (both of them). It hurt me deeply not to be there to support her. She has worked so hard for this occasion, and it was clear throughout the ceremony that she’s as happy as I have ever seen her, surrounded by people who understand how valuable she is to this world. Texas’s gain is Kentucky’s loss, that’s for sure, but I’m mighty proud of Kiya no matter where her journey takes her, even if it’s 17 hours away from me. I trust that one day our paths won’t be so far apart and we can get back to the business of making sister art/music. Until then, I know she’ll be a blessing to anyone she meets and I couldn’t be prouder of, or happier for, her.
