“Say something positive, and you’ll see something positive.” ~ Jim Thompson

mother and child

It has been a long, fruitful, pivotal week capped today by the Slavery in Kentucky Symposium sponsored by the Gaines Center for the Humanities at the Lexington Public Library’s Farrish Theater. I don’t have good photos from the event, but I want to say it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had as a librarian. I felt welcomed and surrounded by people who are kind and genuinely interested in using the documents we as a society create through everyday business and information exchange to piece together deeper truths about ourselves and our society. The group of women working on the Freedom on the Move project that I talked about back in February are hands down the best group of colleagues anyone could ask for. Every time we meet or talk to others, I learn something new, and I’m also learning how to better articulate the value of historic newspapers to the project. That muscle hasn’t been flexed in quite a while, and I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to pull it out of the closet and give it some exercise. Meanwhile, mom hasn’t stopped talking about our visit to Cherry Run Farm last night. It tickled her to death to pet that little 12-hour foal. Plus, I think she’s got a crush on Reg now. She thinks he’s the sweetest thing ever was. She’s not wrong.
