“The older I get the more I understand why roosters just scream to start their day.” ~ Unknown
Ken, Crystal, and I went to dinner at Longhorn Steakhouse this evening. After we’d been there for a while, Crystal pointed out that the table behind us was full of people wearing Morgan County t-shirts. It wasn’t long before I saw one guy in particular come out of the restrooms and stop to talk to the table of Morgan County people. It was my cousin, Ralph Hamilton, the superintendent of Morgan County schools. Crystal asked if I was going to speak to him, so I got up, said hello, asked about his mom, asked where she was living now, if he’d sold the farm yet, was he still living by the airport, yadda yadda, said goodbye, and went back to our table. I told Ken and Crystal I was pretty sure he had no idea who I was. I never saw the lightbulb of recognition turn on. Ken confirmed no lightbulb. I don’t know how many more clues I could have given him. This was hilarious because he was at Hero’s visitation 3.5 years ago, where I took his picture with Shero (or maybe it was Janet’s funeral – they were just a month apart, so they kind of run together in my head). His father, Junior, was Shero’s first cousin, and he died just four months before she did. My point is that he has known me his entire life. Nevertheless, it did not stop me from enjoying our night out, although I will admit to being very, very tempted to confront Ralph on our way out and tell him straight up that he had no clue who I was. Instead, we laughed about the idea and left. I love dinner out on a Friday, and Ken and Crystal have promised me to do it again. I look forward to seeing which cousin doesn’t recognize me next. It’s pretty awesome to be related to so many people that most of them have no clue who you are.
