Today is Lance’s birthday. He would have been 59. He would have been cracking jokes about being 59. The last time I saw him, on his 56th birthday, he followed me to the car and quietly handed me a bag. Inside was this small, delicate piece of pottery. He’d bought it from a Ute potter in Arizona at a high price, a true compliment for a man who never had much money. Today is Ryker Ratliff’s birthday. He was born this afternoon, the grandson of Lance’s best friend, Robin. If we have any magic from beyond then I am absolutely certain Lance planned this. He is smiling. He is cracking jokes about birthdays. He is toasting Ryker, that small, delicate baby boy worth more than all the money in the world. Well played, Lance, and Happy Birthday!
