“When a photographer can’t change a scene, they adjust their angle and lens to get the best shot. Life works the same way. When you can’t change what’s happening, you can still change how you see it. That shift changes everything.” ~ Unknown
You’ve heard me talk about Carol, the dwarf Japanese maple, before. I planted this tree in the first fall I lived in my house, way back in 2007. It was such a weak, small stick of a tree that another bigger stick had to hold it up for two years before it was strong enough to support itself. Now, 17.5 years later, it is huge and gorgeous. The recent freezes have not affected her like they have my poor Redbud and Forsythia bush, each robbed of its colorful buds. If anything, I’d swear it’s made her more vibrant than ever, although you can’t tell it from the rotten color in this photo. It’s also hard to get a realistic sense of her mass with nothing much for size comparison. The two little dogs in the door just ain’t cutting it. But they’re sweet little fellers, and they do the best they can as props. Anyway, I love Carol, and I miss the friend she’s named after, Carol Hart. Carol was an early supporter of the outhouse, and it’s hard to believe she’s been gone 12 years on the 22nd of this month. She would be bowled over by her namesake. Who knows, maybe she’s been helping tend to her from the other side.
