“‘I don’t get it. ‘I can’t do this.’ ‘This doesn’t work.’ Take a deep breath, then add ‘yet’ to the end of each sentence. ‘I don’t get it…yet ‘I can’t do this…yet.’ ‘This doesn’t work…yet.’ It may not be easy, but it doesn’t mean you’ll never meet the challenge.” ~ Unknown
UK: The Orange Cone University… and it’s move-in week. Perfect timing. There’s a record freshman class on campus this year. Today, I passed hundreds of folks with bags of books and no money in their pockets. The marching band’s percussion section was practicing outside the Fine Arts building, their polyrhythms reverberating between the buildings like a heartbeat. They’re my favorite part of the Fall Semester. Sororities have been set to 11 this week, too. Apparently, pink is this year’s color. During a fire alarm earlier this week we mistook their screams for the fire truck siren. That’s talent! I will never forget Becky Ryder’s reaction many years ago as she and I sat quietly in what is now Young Library’s Starbucks as an entire sorority – dressed all in white from head to toe and not a brunette or woman of color among them – made their entrance. They screamed by us, and when the room reached below ear-bleed level again, an exasperated Becky asked, “We burned our bras for this?” Ah, youth. Classes start Monday.
