road to nowhere

There is nothing like a cobblestone street with rails. This particular sample from Cincinnati is an interesting mix of transportation methods and materials. Obviously, the stones are the oldest material, but the cement that anchors the steel rails easily takes second. Though the Romans didn’t invent cement, it was certainly perfected by them. The engineering prowess of the Romans harnessed the strength of cement to build many of their longest-lasting structures, including the Pantheon in Rome. It still stands as the largest unreinforced cement dome in the world. You can read more about the Roman construction of the Pantheon here. While cobblestone may or may not have always been laid on Elm Street in Cincinnati, this particular iteration is modern in its construction. The fairly uniform rectangular squares give it away. No matter. It’s aesthetically wonderful and far more hearty than blacktop could ever be. Here’s to more beautiful cobblestone streets.
