“There’s always something to be grateful for.” ~ Unknown

It was move-in day number two at UK. Stacy Yelton and I took a vacation day to avoid the mayhem and headed south to old Fort Harrod. Her grandparents used to take her frequently as a child. I had never been there. The first thing that caught my eye was this incredible 18th Century Osage Orange Tree. The plaque says it’s actually taller and broader than the national champion, but because it’s trunk has split, it is not recognized as such. Champion or not, it’s enormous.

In Hodgenville they’ve enshrined the cabin in which Abraham Lincoln was born. In Harrodsburg they’ve enshrined the house in which Lincoln’s parents were married. It was moved from its original site some miles from Harrodsburg to the current spot at the Old Fort Harrod State Park. I appreciate the preservation of the cabin, though I find it a bit odd that the surrounding building is actually called the “Lincoln Marriage Temple.” It’s not at all like Cane Run, for example, that enshrines a place of worship. This was a house where two people were married who just happened to be the parents of Abraham Lincoln. Being joined in marriage in a house is not unusual. In any case, it’s a temple and here is its photograph for which I am grateful to have taken on this second move-in day at UK. It was a gorgeous day to be out of the office and discovering some Kentucky history.
