“Integrity is revealed not only by how we treat people when they are present, but how we speak about them when they are not.” ~ Unknown

I had the best time photographing the 10th annual Phoenix Rising event at the Lyric Theater. This year, the event recognized African American women in the horse industry, and I knew two of the four recipients: Lisa Shelbourne and Anastasia Curwood. More on them in a later post, but for now, this hand belongs to an 89-year-old recipient who wrote her comments in cursive. She gave one of the best talks I’ve ever heard, and you would not believe the career she has had; better than most, regardless of gender or race, and some of it while she was nine months pregnant with twins, no less. We owe so much to our elders, those trailblazing women and men who had it so much worse than we have it today. I have so much respect for them, and I’m grateful to hear their stories.
