Gurney took to the water often in his canoe. At his Sunday memorial, Nyoka had his canoe brought to the ballroom. Inside the program was a blank sheet of paper with a simple Dogwood blossom painted on the top (a Pam Dogwood painting). With each program, a pencil was placed, and attendees were encouraged to write on the dogwood sheet. Words they’d like to say to Gurney, or about Gurney, or anything they felt they needed to say. These notes were placed in Gurney’s canoe by night’s end. It was a brilliant way to pay tribute to a brilliant man. Gurney married really well in Nyoka Hawkins. Her love for him was palpable throughout the weekend, and the canoe notes were the cap on a perfect memorial. He was surely pleased.
