Stacy and I drove to Midway to meet beloved (not) rental niece Cassie and (not) rental sister Kelly for lunch at our favorite restaurant, Don Jockey. They are, of course, Stacy’s blood relatives who have let me tag along for decades and become like family. Mom was supposed to go with us, but the weather was sketchy and kept her indoors. Mom and Kelly hit it off instantly when they met about this time last year. Little did any of us imagine Kelly would, soon after that meeting, join the club Mom had just joined herself. The widow’s club no wife wants to be in. The family was no stranger to tragedy even before Craig’s untimely passing on January 6, 2023, but later in the year, Cassie’s only aunt on her father’s side, Katie Bick Menard, whom you met in January 2015, also unexpectedly passed. To say 2023 has been a bad year for the Yelton/Bick/Barnes family would be an understatement. Yet, here are these two beautiful women engaging in life with smiles and love immeasurable. Kelly always complains about being photographed, claiming she’s not photogenic. I beg to differ (see above), and Cassie continues to radiate ageless beauty. What a lucky, lucky woman I am to have gained such soulfully, resonate adopted family as these.
