Meet Katie Bick Menard: one of the coolest people on the planet. She’s smart and funny, and I’m told, quite the prankster from way back. She’s also one of the toughest, most resilient, women I’ve ever known. Katie is Ryan Bick’s aunt. She knew far too well what Ryan’s parents were going through having also lost a child many years ago. Last year she lost her husband, and now a nephew. That’s a lot of close, personal loss. As we were walking to the graveside, I said, “You’re a strong woman, Katie.” Without blinking she replied, “Don’t have a choice. These things happen, and you just have to pick up and move on.” That’s the kind of spirit I admire. A determined attitude that doesn’t let the bad things in life destroy the good things. It can’t always be easy, but Katie was given important tools to help her through. Some of those tools are her totally awesome son Matt, nephew Brett, and grandson Dakota (below). That’s just a glimpse of the wonderfulness that surrounds her. I’m telling you, Katie is the queen of cool, a positive warrior woman, deserving of all goodness that befalls her, and I’m mighty pleased to call her friend.
