One of the last places Gail showed me inside Central Christian Church was the baptismal. I was immediately drawn to the shadow cast by the iron grate which hides it from the sanctuary. The gold and blue colors reminded me of baths I’ve seen from ancient cities. I forgot to ask Gail if they remove the grate during a baptism (I would assume they do). In any case, I loved it. Baptism is an ancient rite, one of exceeding importance to Christians, and I’ve come to realize there are several manner of baptism: immersion, submersion, and pouring or sprinkling (think christening). One doesn’t often find an inviting baptismal such as this, and I’m not entirely sure I’ve ever seen an immersion baptismal before (I’m assuming it’s immersion because it’s pretty shallow for a full dip). The church I grew up in, the church where I was baptized at 14, practiced submersion (one is fully submerged under water). If you were really lucky you were baptized by submersion in a creek, but by the time I was baptized they had pretty much stopped doing that. I would love to photograph someone being baptized in any fashion. It is a sacred act.
