I enjoy a good event. I’m the chair of the CURATE committee this year. CURATE is short for Celebrating University Research Across the Enterprise. It’s a University committee under the Vice President of Research to “provide recurring funds to support…research, scholarship, and creative works…that are not traditionally amenable to external funding,” for eleven CURATE colleges, of which the Libraries are among them. Each year, the CURATE committee hosts an event highlighting research funded by the program. They haven’t always been successful in terms of attendance, but the presentations have always been stellar, which made the low attendance all the more disappointing. So this year, we tried some new things, and boy howdy, did they work. The event wasn’t over before I started hearing compliments about the quality of funded research and presentations. It takes a lot of people to make that happen, and just some of them are included in the four photos above, like Dr. Chad Risko, Asst. VP for Research, who opened the program, Stacy Gaylor (with moi), who worked tirelessly to make sure every aspect of the program was organized – from the food to the audio set-up – Ruth Bryan, who represented UK Libraries by presenting her CURATE-funded research project, and fellow CURATE committee members Don Helme and Brandi Frisby, who worked to select presenters and always bring their wit and wisdom to the committee meetings. Let me just say that, after the last three weeks, today’s event and the wonderful comments that followed were the balm I needed. Without a doubt, Shero was walking beside me because one person told me after the event that I am “so joyful” and “bring such good energy” to the event. It was exactly how I described Shero to someone last week. It was a wow moment, for sure. I am beyond grateful to everyone who made this an awesome day.
