“When life is sweet, say thank you and celebrate. When life is bitter, say thank you and grow.” ~ Shauna Niequist

I don’t talk about Lexington’s other university nearly enough. Transylvania University was the first university west of the Alleghenies. Established around 1783, before statehood, it became one of the top medical universities in the country. The building above is called Old Morrison. Completed in 1834, it was designed by the father of Kentucky Greek Revival architecture, Gideon Shryock, a name I find far harder to say than ‘rural.’ Today, it’s more well-known for the two crypts housed within it of faculty members Constantine Samuel Rafinesque and St. Saveur Francois Bonfils. Around Halloween, Transy students play and hope to win a lottery to spend a night in the crypt. The view from the top step of Old Morrison offers a view of Gratz Park and downtown Lexington. I can’t say it was an especially striking image on such a gloomy day, but you get the point.
