Shero has had several close friends in her life, but one of her oldest and dearest is Barbara Kelly of Wetumpka, Alabama. Mom and Barbara were pregnant at near the same time in 1964/65. They married Army men. Both couples were from small, rural American towns and had been stationed in Germany when they found each other. Shero and Barbara stayed in contact over the years. They have been friends for close to 60 years at this point, and though I was sad mom couldn’t make yesterday’s trip with me, I was just about as tickled to see Barbara as mom might have been. When I got out of the car, she hugged me just like she’d done the last time I saw her way back in 1975. If there hadn’t been things to do, places to go, people to see, I’m confident we’d still be sitting on the couch talking. And that would have been alright by me because we didn’t get nearly enough time yesterday, but what time we got filled my heart with more joy than words can express. Barbara Kelly is a blessing, and I would make that drive again for another 30 minutes on the talking couch.

Oh if only I could have made the trip with you to see my good friend. Maybe next time baby girl. When Barbara called me this morning, she couldn’t express how much she loves you and was mad because she couldn’t spend more time with just you and her. She said “Shirley you all have raised the sweetest that I’ve ever met and I just hope she will come back for another visit”. Made me so proud.
