pure love
The last day of this month is so beautiful here in the Bluegrass state. It stands in stark contrast to how the month started, with frigid cold, ice, snow, and death waiting to take Shero home to the other side. This is one of the last photos of her with her niece, Melissa Wilson Moore, taken two days before her passing. It is one of the most compassionate photos I’ve ever taken. Following her mother’s example, Missy does a lot for our family. From cooking for us to bringing us together in good times and bad. She, Mike, and Macie came to see Shero as much as they could during her last days, and here in the Hospice wing, we heard Shero utter her final words, “I love you,” to Missy, and later to me again. She was barely a whisper by this point, and the energy it must have taken for her to muster that much was surely great, but she did it. What an incredible gift, the words, this photo, and the pure, unadulterated love she left us all. I will always be grateful for being able to see her through to the end. That, too, was a gift so great that there is no word or words to express it appropriately. This photograph says it all.
