“It is to history that we owe our frames of reference, our identities, and our aspirations.” ~ James Baldwin

baking 101

Since Christmas, I’ve been mulling over various cooking and baking ideas. I’m growing bored of doing nothing but work and school work on weekends, and baking/cooking seems to be a suitable short-break activity. Today, I tried my hand at a cream cheese cranberry loaf, mixing the cream cheese and butter by hand the way my grandmother used to do, and in her honor, I used her bowl. The recipe directions were very clear except for two things: flour and amount. Long story short, I learned what happens when you use self-rising flour vs. all-purpose flour, and if the recipe says, “If you want, you can bake two loaves with this batter,” you should assume they’re telling you to bake two loaves. Needless to say, I was thankful for the warm temps with the back door open for an hour. It made for a good laugh, that’s for sure, and even though this try wasn’t wildly successful, it was successful enough to make me want to do it again. But not too soon. I’m only into cleaning up so much burnt dough before work/school work starts looking super fun again.
