“The same boiling water that softens potatoes, hardens eggs. It’s all about what you’re made of, not your circumstances!” ~ Jim Sichko

I was leaving the office the day I returned to work after the winter break as the sun was setting against the day’s storm clouds. I often walk past the Newman Catholic Center on my way to the car, but there were enough cars gone that I could see the Virgin Mary statue they have in their courtyard. But then I noticed they’d added the kneeling bench since I’d last been able to see the courtyard, and also, there were photos in front of the statue.  I’ve been walking past this space for years, and it has felt much like an afterthought, not a place of contemplation, but something over the last year has changed, turning the space into something more significant. In the waning sunset Mammatus clouds, I stopped. I’m not Catholic, but I will respect a place of worship important to another, and in this moment, I thought it was beautiful.
