birthdayness

We celebrated mom’s birthday today (it is the 24th) by getting her hair cut and then meeting aunts Lois and Barbara at Longhorn Steakhouse for a fabulous dinner. After stuffing ourselves for nearly two hours (the wait staff was not speedy, to be honest), we were walking out when I recognized Shelley Crouch. We had never met in person, I couldn’t think of her name or her husband, Wesley, so I just hollered, “Nila!” Nila is Wesley’s mother, and you know Nila as my Aunt Nila, who shares my love of Bybee Pottery. I have dinner with her and her husband, John, every so often. I have seen photos of their children and grandchildren for years, but finally, today got to meet Wesley. He and Shelley were as sweet as I had expected they would be…once they figured out who I was. After I hollered, “Nila!” and got their attention, I was lost for words and just kept saying my name, thinking surely I am the only Kopana they could possibly know – and I am, but that doesn’t mean it turns on a light if you’ve never met me. The middle-aged brain can be tough some days, and this was one of those days. Anyway, it was the perfect chance meeting at sunset after a beautiful Bluegrass day. What a great way to start Shero’s birthday, and I’m just thrilled to have finally met Wesley.
