“How to win at life: 1. Let people do what they need to do to make them happy, mind your own business and do what you need to do to make you happy. The end.” ~ Unknown

stacks on stacks

I read a lot, and I read a lot of different books usually at the same time. This is just one stack in the house. I’ve been doing Bible study with my peeps at First Presbyterian and we’re reading Mark during Epiphany. Between semesters I was reading Iron Kingdom about the rise and fall of Prussia. It’s a huge read, but completely fascinating. It offers great insight into European ideals of monarchy and empire. Jen Reynolds sent me The Five Wounds for Christmas and I’ve been diving in since. Nikky Finney’s Love Child’s Hotbed of Occasional Poetry is classic Finney full of fire and truth and words that cut through the pages like a mighty sword. Nobody writes like her. Nobody. Finally, Charles de Lint’s Someplace to be Flying is really special for a couple of reasons not the least of which is that it’s dedicated to sister Kiya from whom the title was taken from her song Wyoming Wind. “So I asked the raven as he passed by, | I said ‘Tell me, raven, why’d you make the sky?’ | The moon and the stars, I threw them high, | I needed someplace to be flying.” It’s because of Kiya that I learned to love literature as much as I do. So, actually, the stacks of books strategically positioned around the house are her fault.

And I see the main read is on top. Mamaw always said, “never lay anything on top of your Bible….”. Mamaw and Papaw sure did love you and I believe still watching over you and us.
