Got some hang time with my homies Dave (Farris) and V (Vince GriƱo) at the Drum Center. V did some amazing tune up on my 36-year-old-Pearl double pedals. There were four drummers standing in the store when I walked in with the pedals in my hand, and all four in unison exclaimed, “Wow!” like I’d walked in with a hunk of gold. You just don’t see this kind of pedal anymore – and these still work. These pedals have been everywhere with me since 1985. They’ve never been in a case, so they’ve been battered to pieces, thrown, kicked, pounded, abused, and crushed between other heavy gear from coast to coast and they still work, albeit with a squeak and crunch, kinda like me. They finally needed some real TLC, and V was just the guy to give it to them. V knows gear really, really well and I always come away learning something new from him. Since October, when I started refurbing the Ludwigs, it’s the first time I’ve bought new gear in 36 years because, outside of dabbling in snares in the early 90’s, my hardware and kits never needed much. It’s been interesting to see just how much gear has changed, and for the better. Still, as Dave rightly pointed out, that my pedals are still in good working condition speaks to the high quality of the model (whatever model it is). Pearl: they make incredible gear. I’ve got the pedals to prove it.
