“The caterpillar grows wings during a season of isolation. Remember that the next time you’re alone.” ~ Mandy Hale

The DAV serves an important role to the community of veterans. They’re almost always older men and women, making their actions all the more heartening to me. They could be home resting their feet, but instead, they’re climbing mountains in freezing cold or sweltering heat to honour their fellow vets. Mom and Dad didn’t get involved with the DAV until they were a bit older either. Trying to recruit younger vets is sometimes difficult. But it seems that after the children are raised and life begins to take a more golden turn, service begins to creep back in for some. By then, the reflexes are a little slower. The bones ache a little more. Stiffness is a constant companion. So what if you can’t get the gun up to your shoulder, or they don’t all fire at once? It’s not perfection that matters. It’s the heart that matters.
