Tony’s smiling at the book Shero and I got him as a birthday gift (props to Jennifer Reynolds for the suggestion). He is a voracious reader. On his birthday, he was reading book #27 for the year. I’m sure he’s on 29 by now, and it’s barely been a week since. He enjoys reading history, especially military history, so it was only natural to get him a book based on oral histories with D-Day vets. Tony is also one of Morgan County’s best historians. Lynn Nickell, God rest his soul, got all the attention, and rightfully so, because he published numerous books. However, Tony is equally knowledgeable and particularly adept at Morgan County veteran history. He knows generations of men and women who have served, not just those who died in combat. He was also involved in organizing and running the Morgan County Historical Society. It couldn’t be sustained through COVID-19, unfortunately, and none of the younger generations stepped up to help (don’t get me started on how much that disappoints me). It was forced to close, and the donated materials were returned to the families. It was a sad day for local history, and I felt bad for Tony, who had put so much hard work and effort into it. However, Morgan County’s loss is our gain because we get to spend much more time making him smile, and that makes me happy.
