Doc

Ladies and gentlemen meet Dr. Norman W. Umphenour, or simply “Doc” as Charlotte and many others know him. We were maybe 15 minutes into my haircut yesterday when Doc arrived an hour early for his own appointment with Charlotte. It was one of the finest mistakes to be made. He greeted me like he’d known me his whole life, and after an hour, it felt like we’d known each other just about that long. Doc is a large animal vet who specializes in equine medicine. He was on staff at Ashford Stud for years, but he has treated horses all over the country. He received the Alumni Award from his alma mater Kansas State back in 2007, and rightfully so. He would have to be an exceptional doctor to work in the thoroughbred industry as many decades as he has. But our connection with horses – including Maggie Jacobs – was but one point we had in common. It turned out that he was born in southeastern Kansas, and has spent a lot of time in and around my second home of Tahlequah in Northeast Oklahoma. Let me tell you, when we made that connection, poor Charlotte couldn’t get a word in. We talked about everything from the pristine waters flowing to the Illinois to the Joplin Spook Light. We could have talked all afternoon, and probably would have if I hadn’t had a meeting waiting on me. We’ve vowed to see one another again. I think I might need to grab Maggie one fine Saturday and go see Doc and his wife Roxy. He was such a blessing to meet that I’m looking forward to soaking up more of his bright light of joy.
