“Everyone complains about the weather, but nobody ever seems to do anything about it.” ~ Willard Scott
In addition to my HP course, I took a chance on a compressed course in Appalachian Studies, emphasising resilience. I’ve never taken a compressed course before, but you’ve got a lot to do in a very short amount of time. The class began March 1, and we’d met twice since, but this entire week is devoted to studying together. As I said yesterday, the first stop was Robinson Forest. We stayed in fabulous cabins built in the 1920s from lumber out of the forest; some of it is the now-extinct American Chestnut. We popped off the first of many group shots before we were driven up to the forest Fire Tower to hike back down. I was only 1/3 of the way up the tower when I took the second group shot. They thought I was going to set the timer and somehow run down in ten seconds for the group shot, but no. This was their introduction to what everyone calls my selfies, except my selfies always come with friends. And I consider these young people friends for sure. They are good. They are smart. They are funny. They are compassionate. And I hope they’re able to fix this world. They deserve a clean, livable, just planet. It is my honor to be in their company.
