“I say to everybody, love is what wakes you up in the morning, love is what makes you walk, and love is what makes you hope.” ~ Jerry Lewis

Mothman

I’ve had Duane Adams on my mind today as Stacy and I travelled to Athens, Ohio, for the 46th annual Appalachian Studies Association conference at Ohio University. There are several ways to get to Athens from Lexington, but we decided to take the scenic route along the Ohio River. This route takes us past Gallipolis, Ohio and Point Pleasant, West Virginia, where the 1967 collapse of the Silver Bridge killed 46, and through myth, was linked to the legendary Mothman first sighted several months earlier. That’s where Duane comes in. He lived in Gallipolis for a time, and we talked about the Mothman legend and the heavily attended Mothman festival. I’ve been up this way before, but this time I was determined to go to Point Pleasant. Little did I know Mothman would be dressed for St. Paddy’s Day. Bonus. A quick jaunt through the museum, a fast glance at the river, and several shots with the statue, and it was back on the road to make the awards dinner in time. It was a little adventure, but an adventure nonetheless. That counts as a win.
