Day one of the Appalachian Studies Association’s annual conference is in the books, and UK grads dominated the awards! Madison Mooney, above, won the inaugural Tammy Clemons Vision Award. Tammy was a friend and superior Appalachian scholar who tragically died in January from ovarian cancer at only 53. It was a devastating blow to Appalachia and many, many people whose lives she touched. But Madison and Lacy Snapp, the second Clemons Award winner, were deserving because their work continues Tammy’s legacy. Jed DeBruin won the Wilma Dykeman post-doc fellowship, and Michelle Roberts won the Carl Ross graduate paper award. Madison is now in Martin County and is known as the Water Woman of Eastern Kentucky because of the work she does. Jed is teaching at Jacksonville State in northern Alabama. Both are graduates of UK and worked through the Appalachian Studies program. Michelle is a doctoral student at UK working on rural health. They’re just incredible people, all three of them, so every time I hear somebody say millennials ain’t squat, I reckon they don’t my millennials. These people are Appalachia’s future, and it is in good hands.
