ouch

So, yea, I’m sitting on mom’s deck writing the outhouse today thanks to a generator she and dad bought for me for my birthday several years ago after yet another power outage. Lexington suffers a few too many power outages partly because the lines in all but the new developments are above ground and because they do not have an ordinance against planting trees too close to the easements. But even if they did, yesterday’s storm would have taken out many lines anyway. Straight-line wind, folks. They’re no joke, so if you’re warned about them, take them seriously. I can honestly say I have never experienced a storm as long-lasting as yesterday’s storm. Our power went off at 4:45 pm yesterday afternoon. That was probably thirty minutes after the storm got revved up (again), but the winds did not stop howling with 50-75 mph gusts until 11 pm last night. It was a long time to be in an intense state. And while the damage may not be as impressive as that of a tornado, there is significant damage just the same. Just look at these photos I snapped while I was out getting gas for the generator, and these are just in my neighbourhood. As of this writing, there are still 400,000 people without power because of similar damage. Come Monday, I’ll be having estimates made on my roof, my garage windows, and mom’s garage roof because they all suffered some damage, but at least we didn’t have a tree through either house. I passed no fewer than five houses with trees IN them, and again, that was just in my neighborhood. So we’re without power until further notice, and from the looks of things, it could be Tuesday before it comes back on. I’ve got a cousin or two that might have to host me for a shower and some laundry before it’s all said and done. I can’t go to work stinking on Monday. Anyway, if you’re reading this, count your blessings and always stay aware of the weather. And if you missed the outhouse last night, well, it has been posted now, and you’ll get to hear the sad story about all that. This is not the weekend I had planned, but then, I don’t think it’s a weekend most of us had planned. I’m sure grateful it wasn’t worse and especially grateful I had mom nearby so I could help. She weathered the storm like the Shero she is, and we met an awful lot of kind folks at breakfast this morning. Oh, lest I forget to say a thousand thank yous to the incredible help I got from Mr Boyfriend AKA Ken Trainer and Crystal, along with Robert Dale and Mike Moore. They managed to walk me through a few things to get it all set up for the next few days.

lots of ouch
