One of the things I enjoyed about yesterday was seeing some of the wood carvings Chris Terrill has made. He carved a beautiful Santa tree ornament that he gave to me for Christmas, and he’s made several things for mom and dad. It wasn’t until yesterday that I discovered he’s completely self taught. A true folk artist! He was complaining that he never had anyone show him anything, and no one around West Liberty does what he’s doing, so he’s not sure if he’s doing things right. Meanwhile, I’m thinking “this is incredible!”

I admire Chris for not being deterred by the lack of mentorship. A lot of people would just stop doing it, or never show anybody what they’re doing, let alone talk about it. I trust he’ll keep carving, getting better with every stroke, and that folks will begin to appreciate what a talented man he is.  Such talent and fortitude are inspiring.
