Today was a big, big day because I finally got to see Rental Family Pam Bick and Cassie Whitehouse for the first time since Corrine and Connor Barnes’ baby shower in January 2020. It is remarkable how much has changed in our collective lives – and the world – in those 16 months. Not only have we lived in isolation and survived a pandemic, but two really important people we loved – Kim Murphy and Barbara Barnes whom I also last saw at the baby shower – have left us. Weight has been gained and lost and gained again, and aging has never felt so fast. There’s a lot more gray hair now, except for Cassie, but then, she hasn’t aged in 20 years so she doesn’t count. One thing that hasn’t changed? Pam looking at me and my camera as the world swirls around behind us, and for those few moments, it’s just me and her having a conversation without words. One of the things I love about photography is finding those people who can talk to me without ever saying a word. They are rare indeed, but Pam has always been one of those people, and we have had many, many wordless talks. I have appreciated every single one.
