“May the things that cause you pain also open your eyes.” ~ Kalen Dion

the first

We checked off another first when we placed flowers on Dad’s grave Saturday afternoon. Despite the lack of rain, the grass is coming along, and overall, it was an okay experience. As okay as it could have been I guess. Mom and I weren’t reduced to sobs, so I count that a win. But Saturday brought some very unexpected news, too. Dad’s closest sibling in age, Phillip, suffered an episode from a previously undiscovered hemorrhagic brain tumor. He’d had a spot of Melanoma removed from his neck about two years ago, a spot on his lungs treated with radiation, and now this. Phillip was beginning his journey with Dementia just as Dad had done, so I thought we were settling in for another long goodbye. But, no. I visited with Phillip this evening, and he remains in good spirits, if a bit loopy from the Morphine. Dad’s only been gone seven months. The family has hardly had time to catch our collective breath. In whatever manner you observe, say a prayer, light a candle, or think healing, supportive thoughts as we steel ourselves against the inevitable. Phillip Terry is an outstanding human being. He served this country with distinction. He’s another Hero in this family.
