best man, best friend

I cleared off Shero’s fridge pictures. The shot of her and Hero is so cute. They were young, healthy, stylish, eating ice cream on a stick across the road at the neighbor’s house, Elmer and Irene Collinsworth, in Bayestown. Today, there are two houses where this one once stood, thanks to poor planning after the tornado. Elmer worked for the Treadways as a carpenter. That’s him in the porch swing. The Treadways were landlords of most of the Bayestown houses, including Elmer’s and my grandparents’. Elmer’s house was one of the best on the street because of his outstanding carpentry skills. I’m not sure where the photo of Shero and her BFF, Dixie Hill, was taken. It’s either the old WPA high school or, more likely, the old courthouse where Dixie’s dad, Austin Hill, was the County Court Clerk for decades. Those girls remained BFFs until Dixie died of cancer some years before the tornado in 2012. Dixie’s story about a boy she liked just about doubled me over with laughter. Dixie and Shero had been to the shoe store one day after school and were walking down Main Street when a boy Dixie had a crush on drove by. He rolled down the window and yelled, “Hey Dixie! Where’re ya going?” She yelled back, “Pair of shoes!” She didn’t understand why he started laughing and sped away until Shero told her what he had really asked. Needless to say, he did not ask her out.
