My copy of the long-anticipated book about the Lexington legend, Alfalfa, arrived today. I wasn’t able to attend the book release party at the beginning of the month, so I’ve been patiently waiting to see the final product. You might recall meeting most of the authors nearly two years ago, so that tells you how much work they’ve put into this. It is a beautiful, beautiful book full of stories, lore, and recipes from the famous restaurant. The picture section is fabulous. When I first met Kiya, she’d been working as the maître d’ at Alfalfa before taking a job in the children’s section at the Lexington Public Library when it was in the Carnegie Center. More than that, she was also Judy Sackett’s GA at UK Libraries. Is it a small world or what? So, fast forward 40 years, and here’s a book about that Lexington staple that meant so much to so many. Honestly, campus has never been the same without. I hope someday soon another hub of gifted, politically active, progressive students emerges from the shadows of campus and offers a place for those skills and conversations to be nurtured and honed. You can’t have a decent University without it, or without cinnamon coffee.
