“Fear does not stop death. It stops life. And worrying does not take away tomorrow’s troubles. It takes away today’s peace.” ~ Unknown
Co-worker Lewis Warden came to my office all smiles yesterday. He’s processing Herald-Leader photographs and came across this picture of Stacy from 1985 when she was working at famed WKQQ 98.1 as disc jockey and music director. (I’ve removed all recognizable features in case there’s a copyright issue, sorry.) WKQQ was one of the best rock radio stations in the country, which you wouldn’t expect out of Lexington, Kentucky, but lo, they were. If you lived in Central and Eastern Kentucky in the late 1970s through 1990-ish, QQ was the place to hear new artists and great rock and roll 24/7. In Eastern Kentucky, we’d sometimes have to get way up on a hill to pick them up, and even then, the wind would have to be blowing the right direction (not kidding). It was a real treat to hear them. Stacy and I first met in 1988 at WKQQ when that little band I was in did an in-studio in support of the first record, which, now that I think about it, was released in May 1988 just after the Derby, so 37 years ago. We would have done the in-studio at WKQQ in the summer, so I reckon Stacy and I have known each other for nearly 37 years, come July or August. Good lord, time flies! Anyway, back to the picture, I laughed and said, “That’s the most disingenuous smile I’ve ever seen on her.” I sent the photo to Stacy, and she replied, “LOL Oh dear. That unfortunate mullet.” I reminded her that everyone had the unfortunate mullet in the 1980s. We had a pretty good laugh at the whole thing. Now, I’m waiting for Lewis to show up with some horrid photo of me. It won’t be a headshot like Stacy’s. It’ll be something worse, because I remember one of the paper’s photographers took us out to some horse farm (typical and so painfully uncreative) and did a bunch of photos on a fence, again supporting that first record. I was still getting over a bad case of Mono and looked emaciated and pale. I’m telling you, it won’t be a good look. I’ll be sure to share it if it ever shows up. In the meantime, here’s a blurry Stacy Yelton, Lexington’s best DJ.
