I was given a private showing of Mama Heis’ latest creations before yesterday’s Cinco de Mayo fajita extravaganza. Crystal’s creativity comes honestly, as Elaine has dabbled in a variety of mediums throughout her life. She crocheted when she was younger, then set it aside for other things like glass art. Not long ago, she picked it up again to make baby blankets for local hospitals. Crystal has a former student who just had a beautiful baby girl, and Elaine crocheted three blankets for her to choose from. The photos don’t do the needlework justice. Up close, they’re three different patterns, each immaculately woven and perfect. I’m inspired to take up crochet after last night’s exhibit. It’s a one-needle affair, and would be a good way to work up to two-needle knitting, which is what this new generation of librarians does at every meeting they go to. They don’t take notes. They knit. Frankly, it looks a lot more fun than note-taking, and if I could make something beautiful and kind, like baby blankets, I’d be thrilled to do it and have Mama Heis to thank for it. #RetirementGoals
