Today felt like Christmas. First, I was stunned to see one of my photos in the Herald-Leader this morning from yesterday’s press conference at the Pope Villa (below). This is one of America’s most important houses, designed by the man many consider America’s first architect, Benjamin Henry Latrobe. The Pope Villa is one of only three Latrobe houses in the country, and I first talked about it back in 2021. The day would have been great if that’s all that happened, but little did I know the best was yet to come. After supper, I found a package on my porch. My good friend Allen Berry gifted me his father’s Yashica MAT 124 twin-lens reflex camera. I have wanted a twin-lens camera my entire life. I’ve made do with my ratty plastic Russian Lubitel that might be worth $50 today, but was only $20 back in the mid-1990s and needs electrical tape to keep light leaks to a minimum, which is fine because its plastic lens really do some great stuff. But I’ve wanted a twin-lens with real glass, and Allen thought enough of me to see that this one found a home with me. The first MAT 124s were built in 1968, the same year as my Ludwig kit. Music is how Allen and I met, so the dots just keep connecting. 1968 was a very good year as far as I’m concerned. I cannot wait to find my stash of 120mm film (somewhere in this house) and try Allen. Yes, I have named the Yashica Allen. His kind letter reminded me that we have been friends for nearly 20 years, and I can think of nothing finer to celebrate our anniversary than finding that film and seeing what Allen can do. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve such good friends and kindness, but I hope I return the kindness at every turn. And Allen, the person, will be getting many photos from his namesake very soon.
