“Work is what you do for others, liebchen. Art is what you do for yourself.” ~ Stephen Sondheim

Captain Kentucky

Today, it was time for Captain Kentucky to move on to the next big thing on the other side of the veil. After 89 years of a most colorful life, who could ask for more from one of the funniest men to walk the Earth? The Herald-Leader offered a quick story about his passing, but for those unfamiliar with Ed McClanahan’s influence on Kentucky and throughout the Kentucky writing community, one need only talk to the many writers who studied under or influenced by his sharp wit and “loquacious” prose. This piece and interview written just last year by Celeste Lewis is the best place to start. I feel extremely fortune to have to have lived in Lexington and run into Ed on numerous occasions. What a jolly soul. The world’s a lot less funny today.
