“Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings,
turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.” ~ William Arthur Ward

where the hanging fern grows
where the hanging fern grows

Judy and I were walking a side street in Ybor City when something in my peripheral vision stopped me. I have never seen anything like this: ferns growing up the side of a wall, nestled between electrical wires, and streaming down the pipes like someone planted them. What you don’t see are ferns growing all the way to the top of the building in the cracks. Wet and wrapped around the mass of electrical lines, I don’t know how the thing hasn’t caught fire. It was amazing to see, really, and no wonder I came home with overloaded allergies. What’s the connection, you ask? The kind of humidity it takes to support ferns growing wild in the cracks of a building also spawn a great deal of mold. My allergies were retested just today. Even after five years of shots, I remain highly allergic to mold. All kinds of it; seasonal and perennial. Now that the tests are over I can go back to my antihistamines. Bring on the creeping ferns I say! They’re really, really fascinating.
