Suppose you’ve been watching/listening to the news. In that case, you’re familiar with the backlash happening in Iran after a young woman was killed by the Morality Police (seriously, that’s what they’re called). The fact that she didn’t have on her headdress was cause enough to warrant the killing. I’m sure Masha Amini’s death wasn’t the first for an immoral infraction, but for some reason, it may be the first to spark this level of outrage. In the Islamic state, it’s a very big deal – and dangerous – to stand up for women’s rights (many rights, really), and as a result, at least one other young woman has been killed. During last Saturday’s mural tour, our bus happened upon the Iranian protests in DTLA. I’d heard them from inside my hotel hours before, and I was a little shocked that they were still in the streets by the time our bus rolled through. That alone was impressive. We had to wait for the marchers to pass before the cops reopened the intersection. It wasn’t long, but we continued to pass protestors on foot for another 30 to 60 minutes.
