“Find a place inside where there’s joy, and the joy will burn out the pain.” ~ Joseph Campbell

open/closed

Last Saturday I took a three-hour tour (turned into four hours) with others from the Oral History Association conference to see a variety of street art murals around DTLA and East LA. Yet, somehow this little ramshackle theater caught my attention and held it. It turns out that Bob Baker and his Marionettes are a LA staple. This is the original marionette theater that opened in 1963 in an old props building. After Mr Baker died in 2014 at the age of 90, they moved the theater to another location. I didn’t see the new theater, but I doubt it’s as compelling as this original building. I could spend months photographing around DTLA. There’s an endless stream of buildings like this. So much personality.
