I had some planting to do over the weekend. BFF Robin brought me two peach trees she had grown from seed, and a ton of yellow iris she had thinned from her own bunch. I planted one Robin peach seedling at Stacy’s. She made sure the little tree was well-watered and built a small cocoon of chicken wire to protect it from nibbling rabbits. The next day, when I returned from my cemetery adventure in EKY, I dug a flower bed around the bird bath and last year’s Robin peach tree. I planted this year’s Robin peach tree opposite it and spread a healthy dose of the iris rhizomes between. This area is where the sugar maple used to be, and the ground was soft, woody, and easily rid of grass. The timing was perfect for yesterday’s record rainfall of five inches, the wettest October day in Lexington’s recorded history. It’ll be a few years yet for the peaches, but I’m willing to bet the iris will be gorgeous in spring.
