I can’t begin to tell you how thrilling – and what an honor – it is to have friends still send me snail mail AND snail mail that’s packed with their own music. Angie and I had dinner with Sonia Keck, Robin Jackson, and Steve “Stiv” Kirkpatrick when I was in Tahlequah. Steve and I used to play in a little band together (yes, that little band), and it was he who gifted me Paul Simon’s Rhythm of the Saints for my birthday. I still listen to it 30 years later. When they cart me off to old folks home, I’m taking it with me. We talked about music when we visited, but imagine my surprise when a package arrived from Oklahoma that contained copies of a few of his original songs. The music is awesome, as expected, but his words and just the fact that he thought enough of me to take the time to share his work and heart with me helped get me through last week. I love the music, but I love Steve beyond all telling and I thank my lucky stars every day that we’re friends all these years later.
