You might recall from various outhouse posts that the University of Kentucky has been undergoing an enormous facelift for the last three or four years. Frankly, right now, you can’t sling a cat on campus without hitting a construction fence or dude in florescent safety green. The corner of Euclid and Limestone, where the former Holmes Hall was located, was featured in the outhouse July 9 and again September 5 of last year along with the ornate and beautiful Hamilton House. The photo below shows the dorm replacing the Hamilton House today.

The building that replaces Holmes Hall (below) is also a dorm. Both of these buildings dwarf everything around them. They’re not even finished and they’re blocking the sun, changing the feel of the environment entirely. We’ve gone from open and comfortable to towering and close. I’m sure they will be lovely dorms inside, and certainly an improvement for the students. It remains to be seen if they will truly benefit the student’s learning or the University’s future. Seems a pretty big gamble for an institution that laid off hundreds of workers over the last three years, and keeps the majority of remaining employees in asbestos filled offices. I remain ever hopeful even if I never personally benefit from all of this rearranging.
