Dad needed Wally more than me I guess. Wally crossed the Rainbow Bridge today. It was a freak accident in the backyard. It appears he was chasing a squirrel and ran head first into the trunk of a forsythia bush. It caught him right between the eyes and killed him instantly. My brother-from-another-mother Greg, who had flown in from Arizona for the funeral, had just seen him beneath the tree obsessing over a squirrel. Within minutes of that, Greg walked out back and found him beneath the forsythia. God love his heart, I hope he didn’t feel it. And poor Greg, imagine having to tell me that my dog was dead on the day I’m leaving to bury my dad. God love his heart, too. Wally was so much more dad’s dog than mine in many ways. I rescued Wally, but the minute he met dad it was all over. And once Mom and Dad moved to Lexington it was really over. Wally slept at my house, but he was dad’s dog. I showed a picture of Scrappy at the end of dad’s bed earlier this week, but it was Wally that stayed by his side all the time. They were devoted to each other, and Wally had not been his jovial self since last Sunday. Dad needed him more than we did, but I’ll sure miss him because I loved him, too. He was a good dog.
